For many years, Christians all over the Wokingham Area and the UK have been doing fantastic work in their communities, actively loving and serving those around them. Hope 08 is about harnessing this activity though quality resources and encouragement, to motivate and enable every church denomination and person to do more to reach people in their community, during this twelve-month period.

Hope 08 is a National yearlong Celebration of Christians serving their community but we want to focus on 24th – 26th May 08 Bank holiday, for the church of Wokingham to use their long weekend to serve their community. We would like other events to happen though out the year under the same banner but feel it is important to concentrate making an impact in this specific time.

During the May bank holiday weekend we would like to go into the schools in the Wokingham area and serve them in a practical way. With good relationships and foundations formed with the schools from Wokingham Schools Trust and the Big idea, the schools are very keen for the churches to get involved to help. We may live in one of the wealthiest area of the country but the maintenance of our state schools is not good. We would love the church to offer the schools a free gift of hundreds of people giving them a few hours each of community service to meet their needs. You can sign up using the box on the right.

Hope 08 is a fantastic opportunity to unite the church in bringing lasting change to transform lives of individuals, families and whole communities. Hope is about showing the love of God in a relevant and practical way, Hope is about doing more and doing it together.

Just like in the Big Idea, we would like an army of volunteers of all shapes, ages and sizes to get their hands dirty during the May Bank holiday weekend.
We also need you to pray!! Prayer is a vital part of Hope 08. We want prayer to be at the heart of everything we do, and believe that if we stand together we will see far greater and lasting change.

The success of the Big Idea was built on many churches working together. For Hope 08 we would like to see as many churches as possible joining us in prayer, encouraging volunteers, and raising (the somewhat modest) finances required. Will you join us and see what bringing Hope can do to serve and bless our community?

Help us bring the heart of the church into the school community

At the beginning of the last century the church was at the heart of the education community. Nowadays, the church has increasingly found herself on the margins of that environment. Through the work of the School Trust, we are bringing the heart of the church into the school community through the development of mutual trust and respect.

There are over 5000 young people attending schools in the Wokingham area. The vast majority of them don’t have any connection with a church, or any real knowledge of what Christian faith is about, or could mean to them. Imagine if you could make that connection, and could explore Christian faith with them. That’s what we are doing… every single week.

In order to continue this work at its current level we need to raise another £20,000 in regular donations. Please consider giving to this work - just five pounds a month will make a real difference. There is a staggering opportunity ahead of us. Join with us in this important work as we join together to bring the heart of the church into the school community.

Quotes

  • Becky, yr 8 pupil
"Matt and Yvette came in to our school to give us lessons on Stop the Traffik and telling us all about the injustice of the world. Due to this I became very interested in it and want to do more to try and stop it."
  • Miss Gadhia, Head of Yr 7, Emmbrook School
"They've been availbale at break-times so that students who have just come to us have a place that they can call a safe-haven where they can talk through some of the issues they might have with an adult. It's a nice place for yr 7s who are new to the school to go to."
  • Mrs Thomas, PHSE teacher, Forest School
"Having two extra people in the class has meant that we can split into groups and get boys more involved in discussions. They've both brought a really balanced view into Sex-Ed and the communication issues that are involved and, in particular, having a young man helping has helped the boys and really pushed them a little bit into talking about their feelings and any concerns that they might have."
